50ish and Fabulous, doing better

Friendly Fire

I don’t know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.
― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring
They say that friends come into your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. This became very true for me when I divorced. A friend told me that they couldn’t understand why I couldn’t just suck it up. Especially for my kids. The friend who said this is now divorced.
I am now finding myself having survived a divorce, remarried, in my 50’s, an empty nester, and realizing that I could probably use some female friends. After coming to this realization I decided to make an effort to not only make some friends, but to reconnect with acquaintances that I have drifted away from.Last week I was in the grocery store and ran into just such an acquaintance, her kids went to the same school as mine so we saw each other at school events and volunteered together. I liked her, so after we both shared what our kids were doing I suggested that we should go for coffee and told her I was trying to reconnect with women friends now that I was an empty nester. She was very enthusiastic about the idea stating how much she would love that, so we parted ways with the idea that we would connect the next week. I was extremely proud of myself, a self proclaimed introvert who given the choice would live in the woods, tend her garden, and spend most days reading. The elation from feeling like I was moving forward, and actually, possibly, practicing self care was short lived as her parting comment was, ‘It’s so nice to see you again Beth!’
Unfortunately, Beth is my daughters name.
There is no friend as loyal as a book.
